A pre-action system uses closed sprinkler heads and the pipe is charged with compressed air instead of water.  The water is held in check by an electrically-operated sprinkler valve and the compressed air.

A pre-action sprinkler system includes a fire control panel and either smoke or heat detectors.  When both a smoke (or heat) detector is activated and the air pressure in the pipe drops due to an open sprinkler head (activated from a fire or extreme heat), the sprinkler valve opens and water travels to the open sprinkler head(s).  Pre-Action systems are commonly found in record storage rooms, and data processing facilities in conjunction with an FM-200 system, or in refrigerated or freezer warehouses.

A deluge system is similar to a pre-action system except the sprinkler heads are open and the pipe is not pressurized with air.  When the detection system is activated water discharges through all of the sprinkler heads in the system.  Deluge systems are found in such applications as power plants, aircraft hangars, and chemical storage or processing facilities.

Fire Tech Fire Protection can provide and install both the sprinkler system and the detection system.
